As of April 19, 2022 the work on The Scottsville Kentucky Train Depot is progressing. The metal framework and quality concrete blocks for underpinning part of the east end of the freight section have been delivered. Next will be removing the old one and moving the framework to that end.

Thursday, April 21, at the Chamber breakfast The Scottsville Kentucky Train Depot will receive a $4000 grant from the Dugas Fund for Allen County toward the shelter for the locomotive. The sandblaster and painter are watching the weather for an opportunity to clean and paint the locomotive.

Built in 1886 and closed in 1975 when the rail line was abandoned by the L & N, the Scottsville Kentucky Train Depot served as a passenger and a freight station for almost 90 years.

Friends of the L & N Depot will hold the annual Christmas Tree silent auction and fundraiser on Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4, 2021 at the Washington Center. The event benefits the restoration of the Scottsville train depot.

Bidding will take place on Fri. from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sat. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

We’ve Been Working On The Railroad

The L&N Railroad – That Is

For over 5 years, efforts to restore the Local L&N Railroad Station in Scottsville, Kentucky, have been slow but steady. Our local “Locomotive Fireman”, Dr. Mark Huntsman, Retired Dentist, Rotarian, and Treasurer of the Allen County Historical Society has tirelessly pursued funding for restoring the L&N Railroad Station and creating a Railroad Museum.

That work is now coming to fruition. A $200,000 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Grant, matched with $50,000 local funds the two story passenger portion will be rebuilt.

Recently, The Scottsville Rotary Club, received a $10,000 Rotary District 6710 grant to begin work on the Freight section of the RR Station. Scottsville Rotary and the Allen County Historical Society have partnered on this grant which will make it possible to use the Freight section for Artisan booths, a partial museum and possible a meeting place for small groups.

Dr. Mark Huntsman and Richard Wheaton, both Rotary members and Rotarians will jointly manage the project which will be to level and stabilize the floor. It includes painting and building a new ADA approved handicapped deck and ramp on the East end of the station.

However, help is needed. $10,000 will not be enough to complete the project. Local contributions have already begin to emerge. Rotary and the Historical Society each are contributing $1,000 and at least $2,000 has been promised, for a total match of $4,000.

Without a final cost estimate, we are soliciting contributions that will allow an ongoing effort to “Bring Back” the L&N Railroad Station to its former significance in Scottsville and Allen County. Contributions made to the Scottsville L&N Railroad Project will be tax deductible as they will go through the Allen County Historical Society, a 501(c)3 organization. A vision for the Railroad Station is that it will become an Artisan Center, a RR Museum, and Community Center for residents, visitors and everyone who likes Railroading history. Further, the development in Scottsville’s East end will bring economic value to this end of town.

On February 22nd The City of Scottsville, KY returned to Frankfort the contract required for architect to begin design work on the passenger station. Still waiting on Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s signature to proceed.

Also, The Scottsville Kentucky Train Depot is getting closer to sandblasting and painting Locomotive No. 98. We may need volunteers to seal and paint as soon as the sandblasting is done, probably in about a month. Text Mark at 270-622-8951 if interested.

Plans are underway to reconstruct the passenger section of the Scottsville L&N Depot. Dr. Mark Huntsman and architect Shane Lyle from GRW Lexington, KY discuss plans for the reconstruction.

News for May 2020:

• A $200,000 transportation grant to rebuild the two-story passenger section was announced last summer, but to date we still have not received the contracts from the state. Those have to be signed before the design and bid phases can begin.
• Work on the locomotive has begun and is moving slowly. Not much of that is visible yet.
• Fundraising is ongoing but the Coronavirus has knocked out a couple of planned events. Stay tuned.
• A caboose is available but additional fundraising is needed to move it to Scottsville.

The all too cute Water Pump Planter donated by Tractor Supply along with a Handmade Cutting Board  by Pat Cline and Case Pocket Knife from Ace Hardware will be part of the silent auction at the Ridin’ the Rails Concert September 14, 2019. You’ll also find gift cards from Dumplins, Los Mariachis, Pizza Hut, Food Lion, 4 tickets for a train excursion at the Tennessee Central Railway Museum and many  more items on which to bid.
