SCOTTSVILLE — The L&N Depot used to be a big deal in Scottsville.

“The building served as a combination passenger and freight depot. There was quite a bit of economic development,” said Allen County Historical Society President Jewell Keen. “The oil boom (which happened in the early 1900s) probably lasted longer because of the railroad. The Jackson Hotel was built to house people who were coming into town.”

The railroad went from Gallatin, Tenn., to Scottsville, and was supposed to go farther north, said historical society Treasurer Mark Huntsman.

Scottsville Kentucky Train Depot

Welcome to the Scottsville Kentucky Train Depot

Built in 1886 and closed in 1975 when the rail line was abandoned by the L & N, the Scottsville Train Depot served as a passenger and a freight station for almost 90 years.

The depot stands today as the primary surviving reminder of the days when rail service meant everything to the citizens of Scottsville and Allen County, Kentucky.

Plans are under way to renovate this important building. Grants are being sought, as well as local and regional contributions to help restore the Scottsville Train Depot to its former glory.
